The Sanctuary of Madonna della Neve above Auro: A Major Artistic Treasure of Casto

The Sanctuary of Madonna della Neve above Auro is the greatest artistic treasure of the municipality of Casto. The exterior is plain and certainly not reflective of what lies inside.

The church was built following the apparition of the Virgin Mary on August 1, 1527, to the poor, crippled shepherd Bartolomeo Silvestri, who was miraculously healed.

In 1531, two inhabitants of Auro went to the Bishop of Brescia, Paolo Zane, to request permission on behalf of the Università di Savallo to build a sanctuary at the site of the miracle. The request was granted, and approval was given to the archpriest of Mura (at that time, the parishes of Casto, Comero, and Alone had not yet separated) to begin construction of the temple, which was officially completed in 1555. The existence of the sacristy and the canon’s house is documented as early as 1580. At the same time, a male and female confraternity were established to promote the worship and also the assets of the new sanctuary, dedicated to the Madonna della Neve, referencing the Roman Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, whose feast day almost coincided with the day of the apparition in Auro.

The administrators of the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin above Auro, in agreement with the parish of Saint Sylvester, but especially with the Università and the Pieve di Savallo, later decided to modernize the church. On May 23, 1670, Carlo Antonio Luzzago, the Vicar General of the Bishop of Brescia, granted the archpriest of Savallo permission to expand and restore the church, and to build the choir and sacristy according to the proposed project and under his supervision.

The work proceeded swiftly. By 1680 (the date marked on the bell tower, in the organ chamber), the choir was rebuilt, the two chapels near the presbytery were moved back (according to the dictates of Cardinal Carlo Borromeo); the previous roof, which had been a truss with brick tiles, was replaced with a vaulted ceiling, which was decorated with frescoes and stucco in the following century. The church thus assumed its current appearance. The sanctuary does not have a true façade: a portico with two Tuscan columns was erected in front of the original small 16th-century gable façade, with irregular arches and an upper chamber specially created to house the organ bellows. Beside it stands a very simple bell tower in the Brescia style of the time of the first 16th-century building.

The sumptuous interior (finished around the mid-18th century) is striking not only for the individual works it contains but also for its strong Rococo impact, expressed through stuccoes and frescoes. It is precisely due to these high-quality works that the sanctuary’s interior maintains an elegant organic character, despite the presence of artworks spanning three centuries. The frescoes on the vaults are attributed to Carlo Innocenzo Carloni (circa 1760-1770).

The most important work, which alone justifies a visit, is the Saint Anthony Abbot, a canvas by the Brescia painter Alessandro Bonvicino, also known as il Moretto (1530-1535), perhaps the most beautiful painting in the Valsabbia.

Next, there are two of the finest wooden works produced by the prolific artistic workshop of the Boscaì family of Levrange: the main altar altarpiece in gilded and polychrome wood (before 1739) and the cantoria with an organ case made of carved wood, though never completed with color or gilding (early 18th century). It seems that no organ was ever constructed for this case. The organ is actually located in the counterfacade and is the work of Gaetano Callido (1778), currently inoperable due to the need for restorations.

Completing the interior are marble altars from the best Rezzato school. Above the main altar, in place of the tabernacle, is an ark that holds the miraculous image of the Madonna with Jesus and Saint John the Baptist (a 19th-century copy of an ancient lost original).

This sacred image is venerated by the people of all of Savallo and is carried in procession twice a year: on May 26, for the feast of the Madonna di Caravaggio, and on August 1, the anniversary of the apparition of the Virgin Mary to Auro.
