The Municipality of Casto in History

The present municipality is the result of the merger of the three municipalities of Alone, Comero (with the hamlets of Comero, Famea, Briale, and Auro), and Casto, which took place in 1928. Malpaga, after more than a century of autonomy from the municipality of Posico, was united with Casto in 1814, following the fall of the Napoleonic Empire. However, the historical, religious, and political events of these communities trace their origins back to those of the Savallese area.

This territory, until the 14th century, formed a single civil and religious entity with the Pertiche, known as the Universitas Perticae Savalli. Later, the name Pertica was used to refer to the area now split between the municipalities of Pertica Alta and Pertica Bassa, while the term Pertica di Savallo was used to describe the region between Mura and Alone.

The Pertica di Savallo, extending from Alone to Presegno, was under a single religious entity: the parish of Santa Maria Assunta di Mura, also known as the Pieve di Savallo, from which various parishes began to emerge starting in the 16th century.

Over the centuries, despite modest agricultural productions typical of the medium-mountain region, the countryside managed to support the population, mainly due to the widespread small property ownership in the valleys.

The production of woolen cloths made the Savallese region famous even in the markets of the wealthy Venice of the Doges, thanks to the use of the pastures of Corna di Savallo and the plain of Nasego for the breeding of numerous sheep.

The birth and development of many artisanal and industrial activities in recent decades are a natural evolution of the centuries-old experience in ironworking, which accumulated in the forges of the Savallese region.

The ancient forges, located along the course of the Nozza stream, which powered the heavy hammers with the force of its waters, produced a variety of products, such as agricultural tools, weapons, and nails, highly sought after by the Venetian Republic and the Duchy of Milan.

Notable figures from the area include the commander Oberto da Savallo, who from his castle in Famea (Famiglia), at the end of the 12th century, led the popular faction against the Brescian nobility, the Jesuit father Organtino Gnecchi Soldi, the second father of Japanese Christianity, the patriot and philosopher G. Battista Passerini, and the martyr of the Italian unification, Silvio (Silvestro) Moretti.
